Transformative Impact for the National Coalition on School Diversity
About the client
NCSD’s goal is to increase federal support for states and school districts to make voluntary efforts to diversify their schools.
Our Work
Over the past several years, Raben collaborated with NCSD, driving a federal policy agenda on Capitol Hill and with the Executive Branch. Identifying antiquated provisions hindering school diversity efforts, Raben led bipartisan efforts to remove these barriers over three appropriations cycles.
Our strategies included educating constituents, garnering media coverage at crucial moments in the appropriations cycle, and building partnerships for amplified impact. Simultaneously, we achieved a significant milestone by successfully getting the “Strength in Diversity Act” passed in the House of Representatives during the 116th Congress — the first standalone school diversity bill to do so in decades.
The Impact
Although the bill didn't pass the Senate, Raben secured funding in the FY 22 and FY 23 appropriations cycles for voluntary school diversity efforts. Working closely with the Department of Education, we contributed to the development of parameters for the grant program. The program awarded its first round of grants in 2023, marking a significant step toward realizing NCSD's vision for diverse and inclusive schools.
